Postgraduates: Scholarships

There are several types of scholarships available to postgraduate students:

  • Federally-funded scholarships (fee-remission & living allowance; & living allowance only)
  • University-funded scholarships (living allowance only)
  • Project-funded scholarships (living allowance only)

Project-funded scholarships are awarded by the project leader while the other scholarships are awarded by a central university committee.

All applicants with a first class academic record should consider applying for a scholarship. Demand for scholarships is exceptionally competitive and prospective students are encouraged to apply early in each academic year in order to meet deadlines for Scholarship applications. Note that few fee-remission scholarships are awarded each year.

To stand any chance of winning one you would need at least to hold the equivalent to a Melbourne First Class Honours degree with evidence of good research potential. This means that in order to possibly get a scholarship you should be ranked in the top one or two students in your year. Applications close at the end of October each year.

Occasionally we have special research scholarships, known as studentships, which are available from sponsors in specific research areas. Full-time postgraduate students may earn some additional income, possibly as much as $4,000, by working as part-time tutors.

Overseas applicants must have their Masters or PhD candidature approved before a scholarship offer can be made.
