Barber, Andrew
Ph.D. |
Generality, practical applications and mechanism of the acetaldehyde stimulatory effect in Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentations |
Andrew showed that dosing yeast alcohol fermentations with small amounts of acetaldehyde can restore the intracellular redox balance and greatly improve the ability of the microorganisms to cope with chemical and environmental stresses. He demonstrated how this can be applied in industry to decrease fermentation times and prevent stuck fermentations. |
Cao, Yang
Ph.D. |
Production of three dimensional polymeric scaffolds for use in tissue engineering |
Yang investigated the production of biodegradable polymer scaffolds for tissue engineering. She developed detailed understanding of thermally induced phase separation of polymers and produced scaffolds with novel controllable architectures, without toxic solvents. Her study has provided new insights into how to design tissue engineering scaffolds for human use. |
Coveney, James
Ph.D. |
Tomographic conditions monitoring of taphole operation |
James developed an electromagnetic tomogaphic imaging system for monitoring wear in industrial furnace tapeholes based upon fundamental results obtained from laboratory measurements, industrial measurements and comparison with results predicted by computer simulations and used these results to design and test a condition monitoring system for an industrial taphole operation. |

Modelling the dispersion and dissolution of sperical particles in metallurgical melts |
James studied the dispersion and dissolution of solids dropped into liquids using computational fluid dynamic modelling. The study improved our understanding of the fundamental physical processes governing the dispersion of dissolving particles and will assist in achieving improved performance of metallurgical smelting operations. |

Pan, Ying
Ph.D. |
Interfacial phenomena and kinetics of extraction in micellar and oil/water systems |
Ying studied the influence of surfactants on the rate of transfer of metal ions across liquid interfaces. She has been able to quantify the influence of industrially important surfactants on solvent extraction systems. This has important implications in the optimization of separation processes of many important metals. |

Stickland, Anthony
Ph.D. |
Solid-liquid separation in the water and wastwater industries |
Anthony studied the relationship between the material properties of particulate suspensions from the water and waste water industries and the removal of water from these suspensions using sedimentation, filtration and centrifugation techniques. The work has led to the predictive modelling of filtration devices with worldwide industrial implication. |

The effect of mineralogy on the ammoniacal thiosulphate extraction
of gold |
Sjoerd identified the electrochemical mechanisms
governing the extraction of gold using an ammoniacal thiosulphate
solution. Leaching efficiency was affected by the formation of
layers passivating the gold surface and galvanic interaction
between gold and associated minerals. This work has demonstrated
that a non-toxic and environmentally friendly leaching medium
is feasible for selected gold ores. |
Zhou, Bin
Ph.D. |
Continuous ethanol production by recombinant Escherichia coli |
Bin showed that the genetic stability of recombinant bacteria used to manufacture ethanol continuously from cellulose is improved by immobilizing the cells on porous glass beads and cultivating them in a fluidized bed fermenter. The findings should lead to reductions in the cost of ethanol used to supplement motor fuel. |
