Current Research Activities
The research interests of Associate Professor David Shallcross are in three broad areas: chemical engineering education, ion exchange and psychrometry. Ion exchange is an important separation process with applications ranging from water treatment in power station to the preparation of high-value dairy products.
Associate Professor Shallcross is editor of Education
for Chemical Engineers. This journal is published by the Institution
of Chemical Engineers and is the official journal of the European
Federation of Chemical Engineering. His education research interests
focus on the development of chemical engineering concept inventories.
He is also active in the areas of modeling and simulation of ion exchange processes. Psychrometry is the study of behaviour of gas mixtures in which one component is a condensing vapour and one or more components are non-condensing gases. Humid air is an example of such a system.
Associate Professor Shallcross is active in the preparation of psychrometric charts for non-conventional systems. His recent work includes the study of water vapour in Martian atmosphere for use in the design of hydroponic systems for Mars.
