Summary

The investigation of the molecular structure of geopolymeric materials by multi-nuclear solid- and solution-state NMR has yielded detailed structural information that has enabled a better mechanistic understanding of the geopolymerisation process. A new theoretical model has been formed, incorporating Al-O-Al linkages, which can be used to explain previously poorly understood properties, such as durability, acid resistance, mechanical strength, and more specifically, the thermal properties of geopolymers. Detailed investigations of the kinetics and mechanisms of dehydration, changes in molecular structure and crystallography from ambient temperature to 1000 C have also been undertaken. These investigations, using 29Si, 27Al, 17O, 2H and 1H MAS and 3QMAS-NMR, XRD with Rietveld structural refinement, DTA, TGA and Electron Microscopy (Scanning and Transmission), have been performed at the University of Melbourne and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as part of a collaborative agreement with the United States Air Force, as well as at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Florida State University, USA.

Dr Peter Duxson is also Business Development Manager of Zeobond Pty Ltd.
